The Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) belongs to the corvid (crow) family but, unlike other crows has red legs and a red bill it uses to probe the soil for insects and grubs. Choughs like short, grazed grassland and coastal heathland, where they nest in crevices on rock ledges and cliff faces built from roots, stems, heather, wool, and hair.

There are only small, coastal populations of choughs in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, the Isle of Man and Cornwall. It is also on the Cornish coat of arms, as they were once so common they were known as the 'Cornish Chough,' but they are now growing in population again after being extinct as a breeding bird for many years.
