Black, white, and scarlet – clean markings broken only by movement. The Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is widespread across UK woodlands, parks, and gardens. It climbs in short bursts, tail braced against the trunk, head cocked to listen for hollow bark or insect galleries.
In flight, it moves in a looping arc – three or four wingbeats, then a glide. Drumming in early spring is the clearest sign of territory, echoing from high branches and dead limbs. Though often shy, the species has adapted well to mixed habitats and is now a regular visitor to garden feeders, especially in winter.
