Exploring Biodiversity through Art: A Beetle Illustration Project for Homeschool

Stag Beetle Life Cycle Double-Page Spread

As an illustrator and designer, I am always excited to take on new projects that combine my love of art and education, so it is always amazing to get commissioned by The Little Naturalist Club on their homeschool curriculums. This month was focused on beetles, and I illustrated and designed a field guide, activity guide, and identification guide for their subscription boxes, along with packaging and marketing materials.

The field guide was designed to introduce kids to the fascinating world of beetles and provide a comprehensive overview of the different species found in the British Isles. The activity guide was filled with fun and educational beetle-related projects that could be completed at home, such as creating a beetle habitat, observing beetle behaviour, and building a stag beetle paper puppet, which I designed and tested myself.

The identification guide was an essential component of the curriculum, designed to help children identify different species of British beetles. It was organised in a pocket-sized booklet and included clear illustrations that made it accessible for kids of all ages.

Hayley had an amazing idea to create this, and I created multiple sections children could cut out and stick together in layers to build their own beetle.

Hayley loves the content to be full of bright colours and playful illustrations, in a children’s book-like style that reflects the fun and informative nature of the curriculum she has written.

Working on this project was a truly rewarding experience. It was amazing to see how the curriculum materials I designed helped inspire children to learn about the natural world and encouraged them to explore topics not taught in schools. As an illustrator and designer, it was a pleasure to be a part of something that could have such a positive impact on young learners.

I look forward to continuing to create engaging and informative materials that help children learn and grow.

The Little Naturalists Club closed its doors on the subscription boxes but past projects are available to download and print at home on Etsy. To study this topic, you can purchase your copy here.
