Bringing the Wild Indoors: Designing Wildlife Decals for The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland

As a wildlife illustrator, nothing brings me greater joy and excitement than receiving a message from wildlife organisations, especially big ones!

I was contacted by The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland; believe me it really was a fan girl moment. They had a vision to brighten up their office wall into a vibrant backdrop for meetings, drawing inspiration from my Scottish Caledonian forest wildlife print. The challenge? To craft a larger-scale masterpiece featuring iconic Scottish wildlife.

Caledonian Wildlife from my Wildlife Habitats Calendar

They wanted three large drawings showcasing the capercaillie, the beaver, and a Pine Martin alongwith some smaller decals of a pine hoverfly. To tie it all together, the request included tiny leaf, plant, and branch stickers reminiscent of my Caledonian animals print, creating a dynamic and nature-rich atmosphere.

I started by redrawing images they already liked from my caledonian piece but on a larger scale or, in some cases, starting entirely from scratch. It was essential that  the designs could be magnified without losing the intricate details which was nerve wracking from my side to make them look perfect when printed as I had no control the other end of the chain.

The team sent me some photos of the decals up on the wall, spaced out so they would appear in the back of zoom meetings and with the thoughts to one day fill the wall even more.

Collaborating with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland was a delight, I love working with clients that share my love for wildlife and with such excitement over my work is so rewarding.
