Bringing a Local Nature Reserve to Life: My Experience Illustrating a Site Plan

The Power of Illustration in Conservation Efforts: A Case Study of a Local Nature Reserve's Site Plan Commission

As an illustrator, I have always been passionate about capturing the beauty of nature in my work. Recently, I was commissioned by Willsbridge Mill, a local nature reserve, to create an illustrated site plan for their funding grant application.

Grants can play a crucial role in supporting nature reserves by providing much-needed funding for conservation efforts, land management, and public outreach initiatives. Nature reserves often face numerous challenges, including habitat degradation, invasive species, and lack of resources, making grants an essential source of support. With grants, nature reserves can carry out important projects such as habitat restoration, scientific research, and educational programs.

From CAD Sketch to Artwork: The Process of Creating an Illustrated Site Plan for Willsbridge Mill

The project began with a simple CAD sketch of the site by one of the reserve directors. It was my job to take this sketch and turn it into something that was not only visually appealing but also accurate and informative. To achieve this, I decided to use my unique style to bring the site plan to life. I wanted to create something that would show how beautiful and natural the site is, even in its basic form, and hopefully encourage approval of funding.

I started by sketching out the basic layout of the site, including the trees, the brook, and any areas of interest. Once I had a rough idea of the composition, I started refining the sketches and adding more details. I used a range of colours to make the site plan visually interesting and to highlight the different areas of the reserve.

One of the most challenging aspects of the project was ensuring that the site plan was accurate but simple enough to work as a plan. As my style is often very detailed, this was out of my comfort zone, and I often had to take a step back and reflect back on the brief. It was important that the site plan accurately reflected the reserve, as this would be key to securing funding for future projects.

Overall, the project was a great success. The local nature reserve was thrilled with the site plan, and it was submitted to the local council as part of their funding grant application. I was proud to have played a part in supporting this vital conservation effort, and I hope that my illustrations will help inspire people to visit the reserve and appreciate the beauty of nature.
