Raising Funds for Scottish Wildcat Conservation with an Iron-on Patch

In this blog, I share my passion for supporting the conservation of the Scottish wildcat, one of the UK's most endangered species. To contribute, I designed a woven iron-on patch featuring my illustration of the elusive wildcat, with 20% of sales going to the Saving Wildcats project. This initiative works to protect and restore the wildcat population through breeding programs and habitat restoration efforts. By purchasing the patch, you’re not only showing your support for wildlife conservation but also helping raise awareness of the urgent need to save this iconic species.

Supporting Scottish Wildcats with Art and Conservation

Last year, I raised £200 for Secret World Wildlife Hospital with my European Hedgehog enamel pin after rescuing an injured hedgehog near my home. This year, I wanted to make an even bigger impact, which is why I’m thrilled to introduce my latest product: a beautifully woven patch featuring my illustrated design of the elusive Scottish wildcat.

This Scotish Wildcat, iron-on patch is perfect for personalising backpacks, jackets, or any fabric surface, allowing wildlife lovers to showcase their passion for conservation. Most importantly, 20% of all sales will go directly toward efforts to protect and conserve Scotland’s wildcats, one of the UK’s rarest and most endangered species.

The Scottish Wildcat: The UK's Native Cat

The Scottish wildcat is deeply rooted in Scottish folklore and often referred to as the "Highland Tiger." Once roaming freely across Scotland’s rugged landscapes, this elusive native species is now one of the UK’s most endangered animals, with fewer than 300 wild individuals remaining in small, fragmented areas of the Scottish Highlands. These majestic cats, which resemble domestic tabbies, are a powerful symbol of Scotland’s wild beauty, yet they face a dire future.

The decline of the Scottish wildcat has been driven by habitat loss, human persecution, and hybridisation with domestic and feral cats. With so few purebred wildcats left, time is running out to secure their future in the wild.

Raising awareness is crucial—many people don’t even know the Scottish wildcat exists. By supporting conservation efforts, you’re helping to protect this rare and iconic species, ensuring that future generations can still witness the Highland Tiger in its natural habitat.

Partnering with the "Saving Wildcats" Charity

I wanted to attempt to do my bit in Scottish wildcat conservation, and the only way I know how is through art! So, I am proud to donate 20% of the sales from each patch to the "Saving Wildcats" project. During the design process, I reached out to the team to ensure that my Scottish wildcat packaging included the correct information to help educate the public. They were incredibly supportive of my decision to donate to their charity.

Saving Wildcats is dedicated to reversing the decline of the Scottish wildcat population by running the UK's first wildcat breeding centre for release. They focus on releasing wildcats into protected areas, restoring their natural habitat, and working to reduce the impact of hybridisation with domestic cats.

In 2023, they successfully released their first round of 19 wildcats into Cairngorms National Park. The wildcats are tracked with GPS radio collars, helping the team understand their behaviour, activity, and use of the habitat. Since the release, wild-born kittens have been spotted on trail cameras, and they’ve reached another milestone with the release of more captive-born cats. This ongoing work gives hope for the survival of the Scottish wildcat in the wild.
